I completely agree. I've spent a lot of time trying to get into opera altogether and it is... well just as you say. Whether rock opera or classical opera.
I think a 2 minute song by Bob Dylan or Leadbelly communicates something more sincere than a 4 hour opera and perhaps this is what you are getting at? I mean at the same time Leadbelly or Dylan didn't write anything as complex and deep as say The Ring of the Nibelungen from Wagner. So while it takes a while to understand all the intricusies of the opera and perhaps at first glance it isn't terrible sincere, the end result is actually very sincere and very powerful. Hard to say when dealing with something like The Wall because it is in the "pop" era, so it's ability to go terribly deep... then again to be honest with you, I've probably heard The Wall maybe 20 times in its entirety. I wouldn't say I'm a student of it or really know everything about it to truly say - yeah, this piece tried, but it's actually garbage.
I guess what I'm getting at is I still haven't really heard anything in the past 60 years that has attempted to do a better job at a rock opera. I totally agree with what you were saying about Kendrick. That'd been dumb if that were a rap opera or something. Perhaps what we are concluding is the medium of opera itself is unable to deliver something which efficiently delivers something powerful?
Oh, it's a small thing but I wasn't saying Waters woke up with bombing raid nightmares (although I can't imagine it didn't have ANY effect on him, even if he were a toddler when the war ended), but there's no doubt it effected his childhood.

Out of the early rock operas or overall?
