No New York by Various Artists

Has a compilation ever been more important to a genre/subgenre than this and No Wave?

I'd say that IDM and the Artificial Intelligence Series by Warp Records would come close. I can't believe how lowly rated this album is.

Artificial Intelligence by Various Artists

That is absolutely right. No Wave and No New York defined that whole thing. Just hearing those names again conjures up the whole thing in my mind. Heh heh. And you're right on about artificial intelligence too. There's one other I could think of. The series Logical Progressions is practically synonymous with drum and bass for a lot of people. And one other album that was important to a genre was The Harder They Come.
