To anyone who has never listened to SY before, I would definitely recommend this album to be the first you listen to. It makes all of their other material easy to get in to if you can get in to this, it's the album where Sonic Youth finally found their definitive sound that would lurk in every record they released after this point.
Edit: I'd also like to note I think this is one of the most underrated albums of all time.
