Since Mark E Smith's recent passing, I have been checking out the Fall more than ever before. But they have a fairly large catalog, & I was wondering if there were any fans of the group on this site who would recommend some of the highlights from throughout their career.

I already have Hex Enduction Hour (Deluxe version), & like it very much, but I want to check out more, particularly the later music.

Any suggestions on what else I should try?
My ears are wide open.

Thanks

Ah, their discography is hard to handle. I would suggest this compilation maybe.

50,000 Fall Fans Can't Be Wrong: 39 Gol...y The Fall

It gives a decent overview of some of their better songs up until about 2005 I think.

Two albums that I would suggest if you've already listened to Hex Enduction would be

Grotesque (After The Gramme) by The Fall

and the EP

Slates by The Fall

These were made around the same time period. My favorite period of The Fall.

Starting with this album.

Perverted By Language by The Fall

Mark E Smith's first wife, Brix joined, and changed the sound of the band (somewhat). The albums after this one until about 1990 had a more "radio friendly" sound, or at least as radio friendly as The Fall could get.

Their best in the last 20 years was Country on the Click. You'll struggle to go wrong with anything from the first ten years. The Complete Peel Sessions is almost uniformly excellent as well, probably the best overview you'll find. That version of 'Garden' is life.

You can't really go wrong with either:

Extricate by The Fall
Extricate
or

Bend Sinister by The Fall
