I'm not sure anyone has ever really heard The Four Seasons until you experience the unsurpassed rendition of Adrian Chandler: the "singing", vibrance, sense of rhythm, congruity and emotional sweep, orchestral nuance and color, communication between parts, the breathtaking spontaneity...
Spinning it now. Reminds me so far a bit like the Trevor Pinnock offering with a more "accurate" interpretation, but also has the gusto of the Shaham and Mutter recordings. Itzak Perlman's recording also had similar "additional" flair and near improv to it... which I forgot to list.
Unfortunately, I'm completely ignorant of Vivaldi's Four Seasons. However, I LOVE Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. So since the subject has kind of been changed to them....These are my favorites.
1. Let's Hang On
2. Walk Like a Man
3. Big Girls Don't Cry
4. Working My Way Back to You
5. The Night
6. Sherry
7. Rag Doll
8. Can't Take My Eyes Off of You
9. Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow
10. Oh What a Night
As I compare the recordings I'm noticing it's actually the lilting 2nd movement of the 1st concerto which is the best litmus test. This is true of all music - it's easy to do fast tempo/hard music and hard to do slow tempo/lilting music.
