This is NOT about vinyl vs. CD's! This is about whether an album is recorded analog or digital.
Personally, though, as the frontman of an avant-garde band, I really don't know which one I prefer.
On one hand, I love the sound of analog records. They're a lot of the reason bands like Black Sabbath and ELP sound so good. It's also one of the main reasons why Little Earthquakes is one of my favorite albums ever.
On the other hand, it's so much easier to record digital. Not only is it much cheaper to do (if you have a Mac, then why haven't you recorded an EP in Garageband yet!!), but with things like MIDI technology, there are so many cool tricks you can implement.
Fortunately, my band has been smart enough to compromise on the two techniques. We record digitally, but we record in a way that makes it sound like analog. That's something I'm really proud of.
I think (and I don't know why) that analogue sounds warmer and richer which works with some kinds of music. I find it really hard to listen to digitised Jazz because I think it sounds so cold and a bit sterile.
On the other hand - electronica/dance music sounds way better digitised.
I own a Mac, I'm typing from a Mac right now. I also have GarageBand.
I don't like GarageBand. For several reasons. For example, it isn't polyrhythm friendly, and it doesn't work well for odd time signatures, or just time signature changes.
On top of that, if you have more than, like, four or five tracks running simultaneously, it crashes. This can be REALLY infuriating, especially when trying to record complex harmonies or really layered pieces of work.
To me, I see GarageBand as more of a "sketch pad" where I can put basic stuff together on the fly, like a digital musical notepad, and then explore it later on with better technology.
Oh, also, analog vs. digital really depends on the genre you're working in. _________________ A dick that's bigger than the sun.
I still like the sound of analog on reel to reel for rock or blues music.
Got to be digital for all others.
Just a bit of info on a great download for making music on your computer.
This is THE BEST one for $50 or less. Trust me on this one I highly recommend it.
This does EVERYTHING you need. You can plug in your own instruments or use the ones it comes with. The drums are very good quality. You can make and burn your own music CD from scratch with just this program.
