I've only heard this album a handful of times but it's a lot of fun and it must have really shook things up back in the day. I am going to listen to it a few times this year. I usually play it in the background when I am on the computer for a long time. I don't think I'd be able to sit down and listen to it and give it my complete attention in an ordinary sitting. But, hey, it's a blast!

Despite being an old guy, I missed this one back in the day and only discovered it as the result of a discussion on this site.
And I was glad. Weird but intriguing, chaotic but not merely random. A great listen, just not often.

If The White Album is a mess, then this one is a complete disaster, this has to be the definition of "You either love it or you hate it". Personally, i think this is way way ahead of it's time and a very influential record also.
If im not mistaken this album is one of the pioneers of the "skits" as we know it, which will be used later as a regular thing in albums from artists that are relevant to the date such as Kanye. And obviously there's the experimental side on this thing which is as experimental as you can possibly get...well maybe not, but it was at the time and for years and years to come.
I don't think i love any particular song in the album, but i can say that i love how they keep it interesting with the combination of those out of-time rhythms and weird sounds. If you're looking for an unconventional, adventurous and weird ride, then you should check this out, cause it's a Classic regardless of what some people might say. And i belive i will listen to it again soon too (writing this made me want to hahahaha).

.... while it's a great album, it is one of the most hideous album covers ever.

Like it in patches, but personally would put it behind 4-5 other albums by Beefheart that are more compelling complete listens. _________________ http://distranscontinuum.blogspot.co.uk/
