I remember when The Cool Kids started gaining traction and either The Source or XXL - I used to buy both regularly, perhaps unsurprisingly, and therefore forget which - did a piece on them based around the premise of: "is hipster-hop [their words] a case of style over substance, and are these nerds potentially disrespecting the culture?", or something along those lines. It felt oddly defensive, certainly insular and suspicious, and obliviously outdated. It was probably around the time I pretty much gave up on mainstream hip-hop print media, which was overly in thrall to a few big stars (Rick Ross; Kanye; Wayne; even 50 Cent still), or otherwise desperate to prove its 'golden age' credentials. I shudder to think what they would've made of Brockhampton, who seem from a distance like the bastard offspring of Odd Future, a 21st century rap group tailor-made for genreless Spotify playlists and mid-level lineup placements at large urban indie festivals. I turn 30 this year, and I am too old for this. People seem to like them though, so that's nice. _________________ 2021 in full effect. Come drop me some recs. Y'all know what I like.
