Probably the greatest opening lyrics of any album ever: “Son, I’m thirty, I only went with your mother ‘cause she’s dirty, and I don’t have a decent bone in me, what you get is just what you see.” I actually prefer the first two albums, back-to-front, but difficult to argue this isn’t where they really came into their own and started to sound like nobody else. Blissed out breakbeats, jangly guitars, allusions to soul and funk, and deffo a formative text in the foundation of Britpop. The Mondays were cooler, more dangerous, and just better than almost everything that came after. I consider them part of that accessible art-rock Manchester lineage containing The Fall and Magazine and Joy Division/New Order and The Smiths - and Shaun Ryder’s really the only contender for Mark E. Smith’s crown when it comes to outrageous Northern shout-singers who spout frequently hilarious, genius, poignant, non-sequiturial nonsense.
