LOVE this album.
From my jazz diary:
On “Speak No Evil,” Shorter expands the musical palette by adding Freddie Hubbard to the front line, who’s tone and phrasing are immediately recognizable, but fortunately don’t detract from this being a Shorter album. Swapping Tyner for Herbie Hancock also gives the album a distinctly different mood. I think Tyner was a better match, but I do like the change of pace Hancock brings, and his combination with Hubbard is particularly attractive. The opening “Witch Hunt” is hot. “Dance Cadaverous” is more than just a cool name, but a sublime ballad as well. And the title cut is a gently swinging and laid back, but utterly compelling affair.
