I gave Life is killing me by Type O Negative a listen for a few tracks. Not my usual tipple but sounded good. Not too heavy (sonically or emotionally). I couldn't get into it today but at least I know it's there now!
Next time you're in the mood try their Best-of, , although it's called The Least Worst of Type O Negative. Their cover versions are their best tracks usually. Like Cinnamon Girl and Day Tripper and Summer Breeze. They are a scream.

There are many great ones mentioned here (Blackstar, Carrie & Lowell, Closer, Songs for Drella etc.) but I have to repeat a few like Skeleton Tree which is quite poignant and Neil Young's Tonight's the Night which is another masterpiece.
Mount Eerie's A Crow Looked at Me is worth mentioning, an album with an opening track goes like ''death is real, someone's there and they're not'' and another track opens ''our daughter is one and a half, you've been dead eleven days'... the most personal and geniune album I've heard for a long time.
And I want to mention Springsteen's Nebraska, it might not come as a ''death'' album but it's definitely about mortality.

Blackstar by David Bowie, it was all the more poignant considering the fact that he was dying at the time (infact he died a week after the album came out).
Yes, and we compare it to the absolutely beautiful song by Leonard Cohen: You Want It Darker
You Want It Darker is a fantastic one too, one of Cohen’s best. The best musings on death are always by those who are nearing it.
The previous two albums, which lack lyrics, evoke the feeling I think of when I think about mortality. I think a lot of ambient type music can evoke that reaction. The titles of the albums and songs also help create that picture.
