Not at all. Along with the Beatles, Pink Floyd has been among my favorite bands since I was a kid. I think I appreciate them more now than I ever have.

Some renounce these kinds of popular bands due to over exposure, or the need to establish their own identity. It's understandable. Plenty of douchebags are dadrockers, and when you're uncomfortably trying to establish who you are, you do whatever you can to separate yourself from those who you dislike.

I have no concern about identifying as a Pink Floyd fan. Unlike Applerill, I don't think identifying as a Pink Floyd fan is some sort of guilt-ridden act for a serious music fan. But maybe I'm just totally unaware of just how uncool I am, and just need to glitchy white people electronic music instead.

Absolutely nothing. It's simply more respected than some older forms of music due to its freshness and abstract qualities.

I specifically didn't overgeneralize to avoid that sort of response. Is it a hard pill to swallow that some specifically don't like things because they're popular? It's pretty common.

Yeah, I guess I initially misspoke. I don't mean to assume that everyone is a closet DSOTM worshipper or anything, but I think that a lot of the dislike comes from a general aesthetic that is often considered sophomoric, and by doing so they're missing something very special in that "sophomoricism".

I'll admit sometimes there isn't a clear division between my taste in music and my sense of identity. The Wall makes me cringe, but it's a sort of "that's not me and I don't want it to be" cringe. I might even go as far as to say that all of my "dislikes" in music are intimately related to my sense of self.

I think that's what it's like with most people's taste. That was Carl Wilson's whole point in Let's Talk About Love (which definitely should be an early BEA book club entry, BTW).

Yeah, I don't think this is necessarily a thing to be ashamed of or anything, but rather just a fact of life. We do have some bit of control and power over what we enjoy. It's sort of why the loners in school often end up pushing as far away from the popular music of their peers. We don't like them, so we do what we can to establish a separate identity that cannot be mistaken for being one of them. It's like the punk kids, and Marilynn Manson kids of my old days. They became their own social groups. Dressed differently than everyone else and listened to different things.

And then as you get older, you become a bit less self conscious and more secure in your identity, so you may not push to the extreme fringes anymore.
