- Post subject: Best Ever Guitarist Tournament - Nominations (CLOSED)
|
So I'm gonna go ahead and open up nominations for the best ever guitarist tournament that we're gonna do. As for when we run the voting, we'll see for an exact date, but we'll go ahead and nominate.
Here's how it'll work:
Everyone nominates two guitarists (for now) three guitarists that you believe are the best guitarists for whatever reason. When the competition happens, each person will post a couple samples of work that you believe best supports your nomination of that guitarist and them give your own reasons as to why you like them. Any guitarist is eligible, from any band.
I believe that's it. I'll attempt to keep track of the nominations here. And I'll start:

Django Reinhardt - The genius progenitor of the "gypsy jazz" genre, his influence spread far outside the already vast world of jazz music. His ability to not only string together complex phrases but do so while emoting through each note individually led him to being hailed as one of the all-time greats by people like Jerry Garcia of The Grateful Dead. He managed to have an incredibly illustrious career and a wide range of impact while only being able to solo with two fingers of his left hand, as the hand was partially paralyzed in a fire in his youth.

Clifford Gibson - A genius of country blues guitar and one who doesn't get as much credit as he deserves outside of blues fan circles. I'll quote the liner notes to a posthumous compilation at length:
Quote: | Probably the most striking aspect of Gibson's guitar playing was not his chordal work or his penchant for guitar breaks, which is a departure from convention, but his unique right hand technique. He picked upper underlying bass patterns. Whereas the thumb-work of many blues guitarists is confined to the three lowest strings of the guitar, Gibson's thumb ranges to the third (G) string, and perhaps even to the treble strings. |
