Post subject: [Closed] Best of 1974 1O: Batsumi v. Radio City.
Batsumi was an Afro-Jazz group from South Africa, with a self-titled album recorded in Soweto and led by a blind guitarist named Johnny Mothopeng. I'm afraid I couldn't really find out much else about them, but I'm looking forwarded to hearing the African sounds from the country that gave us Mbube.
In the late sixties, a band called the Box Tops had a couple of hits with songs like "The Letter" and "Cry Like a Baby". The band's leader, Alex Chilton, went on to found another group called Big Star, which itself was a landmark Power Pop band. Their 1974 album is called Radio City.
I don't know why, but I never place Big Star as a band from the early 70's. I always think of them as late 80's early 90's... No clue why though. _________________ Submit Your List for BEA's 2023 Film Poll!
Voted for both. I was not familiar with Batsumi. An exceptional record. _________________ "And can’t you see you’re in on it?

As someone who doesn't appreciate jazz in the slightest there's something to be said for the Batsumi LP - however, it's up against Radio City which I adore.
Batsumi is great, but Big Star created some of the most transcendent power pop records of all time including Radio City... so I'm not sure how to vote here.
