The easiest way to describe it is going to a carnival for the insane. The composition is fabulous throughout and the instruments are played with an insane amount of skill. Henry Cow mainly works because of the insanity of the composition and it's a pretty interesting journey throughout everything the band does. Outside of Secret Treaties, I can't see myself voting against Unrest in this tourney (at least, against the competitors that are currently left). |

Unrest by Henry Cow
RepoMan wrote: | I love its spooky, futuristic ambience and how the tracks evocatively & naturally build. It’s almost impossible to listen to this and not visualize some dystopian future which is probably because so many science fiction soundtracks movies from the 70s & early 80s liberally lifted from it. Mysterious Semblance in particular gives me a sense of wonder at something larger than myself that the best science fiction movies can evoke. It’s influence even extends to 70s horror soundtrack genre which is one of my favorites. Probably most interesting though is it’s clearly the wellspring from which Aphex Twin returned again and again for all his bubbling synths & organic atmospherics. In fact, I would suggest that Tangerine Dream is more important than Kraftwerk for development of IDM but for some reason it doesn’t get nearly the love. Perhaps it’s because they eschewed song structure altogether. It’s definitely more emotive than Autobahn. Of course, many would argue it’s that very absence of emotion that makes Autobahn so seminal. That’d be a really interesting debate. But, I like emotion in my music - even it’s just the hairs on the back of my neck stiffening. |

Hmm, repeated listening hasn't actually done Unrest any favours for me, I'm just not sure I find it all that great. I've already stated in the previous round that Phaedra (and Tangerine Dream in general, for that matter) doesn't really appeal to me as much as I think it should, but I still think I prefer it to Unrest. I don't dislike either of these albums by any means, but I'm not huge on them at all. Leaning towards Phaedra at the moment, but may give each another listen before the day is through. _________________ 2021 in full effect. Come drop me some recs. Y'all know what I like.

Grumpy Old Man wrote: | All right, maybe nobody's throwing their instruments down the stairs. I was confused because it sounds like everybody's playing whatever the hell they want. Pick a tempo, damn it! And when Pink Floyd said "when the band you're in starts playing different tunes", that wasn't advice!
Now that Tangrin guy, he knows how to play music. Actual tunes, consistent tempos, and no smelly sock on the cover. What is that about, anyway? |
All right, Grumpy Old Man, settle down. Unrest wasn't that bad. I thought a couple of the tracks were quite enjoyable. So you liked Phaedra?
Grumpy Old Man wrote: | Well, I guess it didn't annoy the crap out of me. |
That's high praise indeed. Vote to the Tangrin guy.

Had to go with Minos' daughter... None of these really appeal to me much right now...both are too cold, technical and uninspired... _________________ "And can’t you see you’re in on it?

Phaedra is gorgeous and seems to get better with every listen. Unrest has its moments (and Frith really is excellent), but doesn't inspire me all that much after multiple listens. However, I am intrigued enough by Henry Cow to want to explore RIO a bit more.
