Interesting. What Jamaican acts would you class as 'world music/cultural music', just so's to avoid confusion... _________________ 'Reggae' & t'ing

Hey, I like River of Dreams. You could've at least brought up something famously shameful like Graceland.

Interesting. I actually never knew that. Is this a well known fact? _________________ Submit Your List for BEA's 2023 Film Poll!

I'm not sure how well known it is. But my dad knew it, and he's not big on either. Possibly.

Are you telling me River of Dreams is less shameful than Graceland? Graceland is actually really good. _________________ http://jonnyleather.com

Really, anybody that practices music that's labeled as "world, cultural, regional," etc. Reggae, Mento, Calypso, Rocksteady, Ska, etc. IMO, "world music" doesn't really depend on what country the artist is from, but the sound.
I was working on a world chart like this, but most of the regional music I've heard is reggae, so I'm gonna spend my time with various styles today. Just got done with a Calypso album, and I'm playing my second Irish folk album of the day. After that, I'll find a Greek album.

So a Peruvian band that makes Post-Rock is world music?

You literally completely mixed up what I said. "It doesn't matter what country the artist is from" means anybody from any place can make world music, and "the sound" means the cultural sound. As in an American can make a calypso album like Harry Belafonte or any other American, yet the music is a regional genre. So technically, even if someone from a different country created an album of regional music from another country, that does not change the fact the regional music is based on a sound that comes from a specific country's heritage. Even though Harry Belafonte is American, it doesn't change the fact his albums are of Caribbean sounds. His albums are sometimes Calypso, which is a Caribbean genre.
Post-rock is not a world genre. I don't know all of the specifics, but genres like rock, pop, blues, jazz, and sometimes folk are not counted among world genres.

The one good thing about lumping diverse musical styles into one category is that it helps to open you up to all sorts of music. I really liked Paul Simon's Graceland and that led me to discover artists like Fela Kuti, Mulatu Askeke and Tinariwan, none of whom I would have discovered if the "genre" was more narrowly defined. _________________ If you're reading this, that probably means that I had something to say.
