Weld by Neil Young And Crazy Horse

NEIL YOUNG & CRAZY HORSE
WELD
1991-REPRISE
Produced By NEIL YOUNG & DAVID BRIGGS

1. Hey Hey, My My (Into The Black)
2. Crime In The City
3. Blowin' In The Wind
4. Welfare Mothers
5. Love To Burn
6. Cinnamon Girl
7. Mansion On The Hill
8. F*!#in" Up

1. Cortez The Killer
2. Powderfinger
3. Love And Only Love
4. Rockin' In The Free World
5. Like A Hurricane
6. Farmer John
7. Tonight's The Night
8. Roll Another Number

Weld, along with the studio album Ragged Glory, marked the return to straight ahead rock & roll by Neil Young. There's nothing in the notes to indicate exactly where it was recorded. Almost half of the songs here were also on the Live Rust album from 1979. It also contains a strange cover of Dylan's "Blowin' In The Wind" and the old 1957 track "Farmer John". Young may have clogged up the market a bit with his live releases, but like the others, Weld is a great listen: a powerful rock album.

This was actually originally released as a 3 record set called Arc Weld. Sonic Youth had been opening for Young, and he was into their experimentation with noise, which is what the full disc Arc is. It is now sold seperately, and is for completists only...and for those who just dig noise.

I've once described the trio Love and Only Love, Rockin' In The Free World and Like A Hurricane on this album as the best half hour of live rock music on album you can hear on this planet and I still stick to it.

Fireworks by Chris Stamey

CHRIS STAMEY
FIREWORKS
1991-RNA
Produced By CHRIS STAMEY

1. The Company Of Light
2. Something Came Over Me
3. Glorious Delusion
4. Time Is Running Out
5. Two Places At Once
6. Perfect Time
7. The Newlyweds
8. On The Radio (For Ray Davies)
9. All The Heart's Desire/Black Orchids
10. Fireworks (Stll Life #5)
11. The Brakeman's Consolation
12. I Want You
13. You Don't Miss Your Water

Chris Stamey and Peter Holsapple formed The dB's in 1978. The dB's were one of those great bands that no one ever seemed to hear. After a run of non success and a flat refusal by MTV to play their video for "Amplifier" (the video depicted a suicide), Stamey left his obscure band for an equally obscure solo career. And while that career has been spotty, he's made some really great sounding mausic over the years.

Fireworks is a gret example of that. Not perfect by any means (it seems a lot longer than it is mainly because of some dull instrumental filler), when it rocks, it rocks well. Guests include Holsapple, Peter Buck from R.E.M., Mitch Easter, and Joe Jackson's highly underrated bassist Graham Maby. And at the end, a one take live recording of "You Don't Miss Your Water" that's really cool. Stamey deserved more of a spotlight than he's ever gotten. Fireworks is a good, solid power pop album.

14. Leaving It Up To You
15. Baby, What You Want Me To Do?
16. Sudden Death
17. You & Me
18. Coral Moon
19. Mary Lou

After recording two albums with the Velvet Underground, John Cale made three solo folk albums. He then signed with Island Records and released 3 great albums in 1974 and 75: Fear, Slow Dazzle, and Helen Of Troy. That's where The Island Years comes in.

If you are ever looking for an album bargain, this may be the best you'll ever find. Not only does it contain the three aforementioned albums in full, it also has previously uinreleased bonus tracks and some great liner notes...all for the cost of a double cd. And the music? Cale predates punk by a few years, and shows why he's so influential in the genre. Everything here is first rate...even his session musicians: Richard Thompson, Phil Manzanera, Brian Eno, Phil Collins, and Chrs Thomas. You're not likely to find a better deal on 3 great albums than this. Well worth owning.

Give Up by The Postal Service

THE POSTAL SERVICE
GIVE UP
2003-SUB POP
Produced By JIMMY TAMBORELLO & CHRIS WALLA

1. The District Sleeps Alone Tonight
2. Such Great Heights
3. Sleeping In
4. Nothing Better
5. Recycled Air
6. Clark Gable
7. We Will Become Silhouettes
8. This Place Is A Prison
9. Brand New Colony
10. Natural Anthem

The Postal Service was formed out of a chance collaboration between produder Jimmy Tamborello and Ben Gibbard, the front man for Death Cab For Cutie. The album became a huge hit, not only because of the single "We Will Become Silhouettes", but because it was a perfect mix of rock and electronic music. It does take some getting used to, but once you get hooked, it's actually a pretty great record.

There has been no follow up, and according to Gibbard, there never will be one. So this remains sort of the David & David of the 2000's...a one off great record with no 2nd album in sight. This is worth having, though. Very much so.

Mr. Music Head by Adrian Belew

ADRIAN BELEW
MR. MUSIC HEAD
1989-ATLANTIC
Produced By ADRIAN BELEW

1. Oh Daddy
2. House Of Cards
3. One Of Those Days
4. Coconuts
5. Bad Days
6. Peaceable Kingdom
7. Hot Zoo
8. Motor Bungalow
9. Bumpity Bump
10. Bird In A Box
11. 1967
12. Cruelty To Animals

Adrian Belew is known to the world as a great sideman. He has lent his considerable guitar skills to albums by Frank Zappa, Talking Heads, King Crimson, David Bowie, Paul Simon, and many others. His solo career has been an exercise in near obscurity...except for one song. "Oh Daddy" is a duet between Belew and his young daughter Audie, and was an odd little hit for him at the end of the 80's. Otherwise, he'd be completely unknown and widely respected.

Mr. Music Head, like most of Belew's solo work, is spotty. He does have a head for a great hook now and then, but he usually follows it up with a clunker. Here, "House Of Cards" and "Motor Bungalow" are good examples of his pop abilities, and there are others. he doesn't sink into a lot of arty stuff here, but just enough to keep this from being a great record. This isn't bad, but you're always better off finding his session work, or his work with his own band The Bears from the 80's.

Naked by Talking Heads

TALKING HEADS
NAKED
1988-SIRE
Produced By STEVE LILLYWHITE & TALKING HEADS

1. Blind
2. Mr. Jones
3. Totally Nude
4. Ruby Dear
5. (Nothing But) Flowers
6. The Democratic Circus
7. The Facts Of Life
8. Mommy Daddy You And I
9. Big Daddy
10. Bill
11. Cool Water

Just a couple of years before, Talking Heads were maybe the coolest band on the planet. But by 1988, they were coming to the realization that whatever trails they had blazed, they were now eating the dust of those that had come after them. Naked is their farewell album, and rightfully so. It's an album of world rhythms at a time when you didn't need Paul Simon or Talking Heads any more to tell you that African music was good music.

The Heads barely sound interested at this point. The album is well played, but there's that quality that made them who they had been that was now gone. It could have been a lot worse, but at the same time it's strange to see how quickly they fell out of touch with everything. Still, a bad Talking Heads album is better than most decent albums by other bands. Naked is only fair and average. Bad for them,. but not a catastrophe.

Martinis And Bikinis by Sam Phillips

SAM PHILLIPS
MARTINIS & BIKINIS
1994-VIRGIN
Produced By T BONE BURNETT & COLIN MOULDING

1. Love And Kisses
2. Signposts
3. Same Rain
4. Baby I Can't Please You
5. Circle Of Fire
6. Strawberry Road
7. When I Fall
8. Same Changes
9. Black Sky
10. Fighting With Fire
11. I Need Love
12. Wheel Of The Broken Voice
13. Gimme Some Truth

Leslie Phillips left her career in Christian music, married T-Bone Burnett, changed her name to Sam and made some really great records in the 90's. Martinis & Bikinis is a nice little gem, loaded with fine, quirky, and catchy songs. They're almost everywhere..."Same Rain", "Baby I Can't Please You", "Circle Of Fire", "Black Sky", "I Need Love"...in a perfect world, this would have been the biggest record of 1994.

Not to be. Which is too bad, because chances are you missed out on a nice record by a unique (and slightly Beatles obsessed) voice. Phillips does it with the help of her wizard husband Burnett and XTC's Colin Moulding, the Heartbreakers Benmont Tench, Van Dyke Parks and Peter Buck. The missteps are slight except for a puzzling reading of John Lennon's "Gimme Some Truth". This one is well worth checking out.

Greatest Hits 1990-1999: A Tribute To A...ack Crowes

THE BLACK CROWES
GREATEST HITS 1990-1999: A TRIBUTE TO A WORK IN PROGRESS
2000-AMERICAN
Produced By GEORGE DRAKOULIAS, JACK JOSEPH PUIG, KEVIN SHIRLEY & THE BLACK CROWES

1. Jealous Again
2. Twice As Hard
3. Hard To Handle
4. She Talks To Angels
5. Remedy
6. Sting Me
7. Thorn In My Pride
8. Bad Luck Blue Eyes Goodbye
9. A Conspiracy
10. Wiser Time
11. Good Friday
12. Blackberry
13. Kickin' My Heart Around
14. Go Faster
15. Only A Fool
16. By Your Side

No, the Black Crowes did not have 16 hits in the '90's. The hits actually stop here at track 5...so yeah, Greatest Hits is a bit misleading. On the plus side, this is actually pretty well chosen for a Best Of package. With four hits from their debut and another strong four from their second album, the first half is very strong. Their third album, Amorica, is sadly given only 2 tracks, as is the weaker Three Snakes And One Charm.

As is the way it usually works, their newest album at the time, By Your Side, gets a full 4 track treatment instead of giving more space to Amorica. Oh well...it's all about selling what's newest...it's a good thing this didn't come out right after Lions. Overall, a decent collection. And a good way to get the uninitiated started on a (once) very good band.
