- Post subject: Pick Ten Albums to Represent Music- Top 500
|
Pretend that you meet someone who has never heard any of the albums in the top 500 chart. Now, pick 10 albums for them to listen to first to show them what music is all about!
You probably wouldn't point out the top ten as being a good representation of the ten that they should listen to because half of them are Beatles records. Maybe try ten from different genres to give a representation of all music.

Resisting the temptation to put all four Miles Davis albums on here, something like...
Miles Davis - Kind Of Blue
John Coltrane - A Love Supreme
Jimi Hendrix - Electric Ladyland
Simon & Garfunkel - Bridge Over Troubled Water
Nick Drake - Pink Moon
Steely Dan - Aja
XTC - Skylarking
Michael Jackson - Bad
Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works 85-92
A Tribe Called Quest - Midnight Marauders

Some of my favorites, but also some I would introduce to someone because of how unique they are to their respective genres.
The Beatles- Revolver
Jimi Hendrix- Are You Experienced?
John Coltrane- A Love Supreme
Bob Dylan- Blood on the Tracks
Stevie Wonder- Songs In The Key of Life
The Clash- London Calling
King Crimson- In the Court of the Crimson King
The Velvet Underground- Self Titled
Metallica- Master of Puppets
Eminem- MMLP _________________ Attention all planets of the solar federation: We have assumed control.

Kind of Blue - Miles Davis
In Rainbows - Radiohead
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band - The Beatles
The Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd
In the Court of the Crimson King - King Crimson
good kid, m.A.A.d. city - Kendrick Lamar
Lonerism - Tame Impala
Funeral - Arcade Fire
Illinois - Sufjan Stevens
Nevermind - Nirvana
I'm probably gonna rethink this a thousand times, but as of right now I'm happy with it. _________________ These are my favorite albums right now.

Essential listening for those looking to get into music. (20 albums because 10 was too hard)
1959 Miles Davis - Kind of Blue

1965 Bob Dylan - Highway 61 Revisited
1966 The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds
1967 The Velvet Underground & Nico - ST
1967 The Beatles - Sgt Peppers
1972 Nick Drake - Pink Moon
1972 David Bowie - Ziggy Stardust
1973 Pink Floyd - Dark Side of The Moon
1977 Wire - Pink Flag
1986 The Smiths - The Queen Is Dead
1989 The Cure - Disintegration
1991 My Bloody Valentine - Loveless
1994 Nas - Illmatic
1998 In The Aeroplane Over The Sea - Neutral Milk Hotel
2000 Lift Your Skinny Fists - Godspeed You! Black Emperor
2001 The Strokes - Is This It
2004 Madvillain - Madvillainy
2004 Arcade Fire Funeral
2005 Sufjan Stevens - Illinois
That lists mostly classics with a few important favorites tossed in. _________________ Overall - The 2010's - 2020

Sufjan Stevens - Illinois
Dream Theater - Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes From A Memory
Madvillain - Madvillainy
Sigur Rós - Ágætis Byrjun
Live - Throwing Copper
Nick Drake - Pink Moon
Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works 85-92
Miles Davis - Kind Of Blue
Yes - Close To The Edge
The whole point is to whittle it down to ten—if you list a bunch, then it just becomes "favourites from the top 500." Discussion is more fun with a shorter list!
