From what's been mentioned, any Fishmans or Coltrane (that isn't featured in every top 100 list ever) qualifies in my book.
My choice however is Dirty Beaches' Drifters/Love is the Devil. A contemporary retelling of the Berlin Trilogy told through the eyes of a man who constantly feels lost and struggling to find his place in the world. _________________ (insert great song lyric/witty remark/or other here)
It is not the most underrated album of "ALL TIME", but it certainly is underrated.
And that is ok. Some things cant be everything for everyone.

When I want to hear something different with excellent vocals, great guitar; Marc Bolan delivers the goods.
