- Post subject: Albums that always show up in charts you like
|
This is just a stray thought, but I was wondering what albums other people have found consistently show up highly in charts they're impressed by, or if there's one album that, if you see it in someone's chart, you can tell it's going to be good.
Personally, I thought of this because I keep seeing "Blue" in the top 10 of charts I really respect. But curious to see if any of y'all have noticed something similar. _________________ It's easier to say "I love you," than "Yours, sincerely," I suppose

Actually, I'm impressed by charts that have albums that DON'T show up often on people's charts. Good albums, anyways. Charts that only contain all the usual suspects and nothing else are pretty hard to be impressed by. I'm usually most impressed by charts that have maybe 50% classics and 50% good or great non- classics.

i hear ya. sometimes, it's the exclusions that motivate me to scroll through all 100 selections. if i see the beatles, led zeppelin, radiohead, nirvana and the beach boys all in the top ten, i will probably not make it past your top ten.
but then again, yeah, i generally like top tens that showcase bjork, cocteau twins, talk talk, aphex twin, et al, so it certainly goes both ways. _________________ follow me on the bandcamp.

I wouldn't say theres one particular album or artist, but ways I sense a chart will be good are:
1. any of my top 10 or even 20 in their top 10
2. one of my top 25 artists as their #1 (bonus for more than 1 in top 10)
3. nonconventional picks (of bands I like - you dont get style points for being obscure) that are good, underrated
4. albums I've recently been into among the first few pages
5. notes / description / thought / time / effort
It's one of those "I know when I see it" type things _________________ Jeff Lynne 5th Beatle

More than 10 jazz albums.
Jazz albums other than ones by Miles, Coltrane, Mingus, and Getz/Gilberto, The Koln Concert and Brilliant Corners.

I'm usually impressed when a user can fit 10 [insert top 10 band here] albums in their top 10. That was basically me when I joined this site (and maybe hasn't changed ). I think I had 8 R.E.M. albums on my overall at one point in time.
Kidding aside, I'm usually impressed by charts who honestly and methodically are trying to list out their genuine favorites (not what would impress or is the most esoteric or extreme just for the sake of doing so unless of course that's what they like) and usually explain a little of why, even if very little, like a heading on the chart that says I did x, y, and z with this chart.
I don't like decade/overall charts whose sole purpose is to give "dank" recs (again, those who love "dank" music, that's fine). It's great for custom charts or threads, but I suppose I actually case about the aggregated data. It's often frustrating to find a user who would put album "A" on their chart which is more known because it truly is their favorite, but didn't, because they wanted to shout out a "B" album instead.

I had the exact same thought.
Conversely, the albums that really impress me being on a chart rarely show up on more than one

This 100%. I especially hate the one-album-per-artist rule a lot of charts have.
