Like the Stones' great double, Exile on Main Street, this album is a bit of an oxymoron for me. While I don't always love most of the songs individually, they seem to ride will in the midst of a sprawling double. It would seem that, for a double to survive, it would have to have a lot of 'hits' (to my ears at least), but this one really doesn't. And yet it is great from end to end.
Interestingly, one of the songs I'm most likely to skip is the biggest hit, Kashmir. Again this seems a bit backward, as it seems for an album to be a double, the longer songs are most essential, and I generally prefer longer songs. But in this case, that one seems relatively repetitive and takes far too long to actually go anywhere.

Seeing this as the album of the day i couldn't help but notice that Houses Of The Holy and this are pretty damn close in Rank Score (13 points being the difference, which is nothing) Overall Rank (88 and 89 respectively) and even in number of votes they are literally just one vote away from each other. Anyways, great album, but i honestly prefer Houses Of The Holy over this, absolutely love The Rover, Ten Years Gone and Kashmir tho. Haven't heard this one in a while, so i might listen to it soon.

Great album, terrible production and sound quality. Guitar sounds so thin compared to the previous LZ albums. _________________ All time

This used to be my fav Led Zep album, but I've grown to dislike it a lot more. I hope Houses of The Holy surpasses this soon (currently it's only 13 rank scores away at 89th), that album is much more ambitious and well-thoughtout.
....still awesome artwork though!

Not my favorite Zeppelin by any stretch, but there are still some gems on there. My favorite would have to be Trampled Under Foot. _________________ Check out some of my other interest on my own review site. Scum N' Villainy

the double album is a zep touchstone, thanks to the epic "kashmir".
also has the closest thing to a dance tune in the bands discography - "trampled underfoot"
although it has a lot of filler, i always enjoy listening to it.
its not there best work ( for me a 4/5), but as i have said before, Zepplins 2nd rate music
is still better then most bands "best work".
