'Cops Shot the Kid' was the obvious standout on an otherwise largely forgettable Nas comeback. That Slick Rick sample does the heavy lifting, and the song tries to recapture the same vibe as previous Nas summer banger 'Made You Look' (his best song), but it would be remiss to ignore Nas' energetic rhyming here, which stands in stark contrast to the fumbling Ice Cube elsewhere in this tournament ("slap boxin' in the street, crack the hydrant in the heat, cop cars on the creep" beautifully brings to mind, with artful economy, the claustrophic, sweltering New York summer of Do the Right Thing). If only he'd had two verses and we didn't have to deal with that (admittedly not bad) Kanye verse.
Never been able to vibe with KKB, and this song is no different. Sounds like children's music.

Cops Shot The Kid is really good, but obviously I'm voting for my nominee.
There seem to be teams on this, so I may be one of the few people who loved KKB as an electropop group and love them equally as much now that they've adopted a more twee sound. There are three songs on this latest record I was deciding between that I think are basically perfect (this one, Make Believe, and Swimming). I chose the right one to stay true to myself, but perhaps not the right one to try to win the tournament. One thing I appreciated a lot about Time 'N' Place as an album is how the lyrics on it are quite existential, but you can easily miss that if you don't pay close attention. So read the lyrics while you listen to this pop confection, let them sink in, and think about your place in the world and growing older. _________________ Add me on RYM
