Any "Map Of The Problematique" should include this "City Of Delusion" where there are three Muse albums in the top 200.

(I'm sorry...)

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha.

But surely this one is an exception?

I think Black Holes and Revelations is an exceptional modern rock album. Starlight is one of the greatest songs ever written and Knights of Cydonia is not far behind. Can't put it any more succinctly. Muse were never better than they are here.

Best Songs: "Take a Bow", "Starlight", "Soldier's Poem", "City of Delusion", "Knights of Cydonia"

AMAY all-time rank: #80

It's certainly not the worst album in the top 200. I'd listen to this on repeat 500x before I'd listen to either of the Oasis albums.

But yes, while Muse are incredible musicians with a unique style (no they don't sound just like Radiohead... one who thinks such clearly hasn't heard enough Radiohead or Muse... or thinks just dark UK bands all sound the same), they are a bit formulaic and hit a hard wall of a certain level of creativity. Amazing with all their instrumentation, tone, brilliant genre blending and even some decent songwriting... but a bit too formulaic to take too seriously. I'd take them over Led Zeppelin though... (speaking of formulaic UK bands).

I still have a hart time deciding whether I find Muse to be brilliant or annoying.

This album leans more toward the former for me, but not by much.

Despite having 3 albums in the Top 200, I still think BEA users are biased against Muse, especially when compared to Radiohead. If Thom, Jonny, Colin, Ed, and Phil had recorded Origin of Symmetry, Absolution, and Black Holes and Revelations, all 3 of these albums would no doubt be in the BEA Top 100.

Now let's take a look at some of the average track ratings for Black Holes and Revelations...

"Starlight": 87
What it would probably be if Radiohead had recorded it: 91

"Supermassive Black Hole": 86
What it would probably be if Radiohead had recorded it: 90

"Map of the Problematique": 88
What it would probably be if Radiohead had recorded it: 92

"Knights of Cydonia": 90
What it would probably be if Radiohead had recorded it: 94

LordMark, yeah we know BEA's bias against Muse and favoritism towards Radiohead are both unjustified. I'm on the verge of changing my username. But change it to what?

Fischman, I can understand that. I think it's possible to find Muse both brilliant and annoying, but not at the same time of course. Just depends what mood you're in.

I'm seeing Muse live a week from tonight. Looking forward to it.

As for this album, it's pretty good overall. A little inconsistent, but it's got some of the band's best work. Sure, everybody loves the singles but I think Take a Bow is an incredible opening track, while Assassin and Exo Politics are solid album cuts that rarely get any praise.

When this came out I remember thinking “I kinda like the new direction, but I hope they don’t go further down it.” But of course they did, straight to the overblown pompous shit they put out these days. They don’t seem to grow as a band, just go further up Matt Bellamy’s arsehole.
