Seminal jazz album.... that somehow just never clicked with me despite my love for the genre and that period in particular. Far less interesting to me than other big name (and obscure) releases from the same year.

Perhaps because it's primarily a bossa nova album?
I love this record. R.I.P. _________________ Add me on RYM

Just happened to be listening to this today when I found that it was the album of the day. What luck! I listened to this for the first time when I was going through the coffee table book "1001 albums to listen to before you die." It immediately jumped out at me as being something special.
With the opening tracks of "The Girl from Ipanema" and "Doralice," it immediately puts forward a fun pop sensibility that is elevated by Stan Getz' sax chops. The next 2 ballads can kind of run together, but Corcovado brings back Astrud Gilberto's (English language) vocals which were present in the first track, giving the song a haunting air.
With So Danco Samba, the album returns to the dancy pop vibes at the top of the album, and with O Grande Amor, revists the ballads from the middle. Danco Samba in my opinion is overlooked in discussions of the album and is a sleeper track that sticks with you more than you had expected it to. Grande Amor on the other hand I find nice, but a little forgettable.
The album ends with Vivo Sonhando, which acts as a great blend of the pop tunes and ballads which the album has varied between for the previous 7 tracks.
All told, this album is a great listen for setting a calm atmosphere. Perfect for the beach or for having dinner or a glass of wine on the patio. Romantic, fun, and soothing, I would definitely get around to this one before the summer is over (Sorry to my friends in the Southern Hemisphere!).

That's a fair point. Bossa Nova is a regular fixture in jazz, especially from that period, and even among my favorite artists, the bossa nova tracks that appear on their albums are usually my least favorite. There are exceptions, but this isn't one of them.

Astrud Gilberto singing The Girl From Ipanema is always one of the highlights of my summer every year. The whole album is.

Agree with all this. There was a trend in the early 60s, especially on the Prestige label, of jazz artists recording bossa nova flavored albums or tracks, and usually it feels like the artists are watering down their music and chasing a fad.
That said, Astrud Gilberto singing "Girl from Ipanema" is pretty irresistible, very soothing.
