What an atmosphere these musicians create! It is such a joy to be able to get completely lost amongst the vocals and instrumentation on this release with it being so incredibly relaxing. The performances are delicate and beautiful with some of the solos being simply phenomenal. The highlight for me is the stunning sax moments scattered amongst this whole release with Getz absolutely commanding this album. He adds so much colour to every track and demonstrates why he is considered one of the greatest to play the instrument. The ensemble behind him is brilliant also and they give the music such depth whilst maintaining a peaceful environment. The vocals are perfectly utilised as well with the two Gilberto voices combining so well whenever they appear. Overall, this is an album that you can listen to countless times and it will still create this serene atmosphere that you will be desperate to come back to. (Edited)

Beautiful samba sounds. Perfect for a summer's day and night. It's all so lovely, one of the essential jazz albums. Romantic, sexy, relaxing and gorgeous. (Edited)

One relaxing and inviting mix of jazz and samba, empowering the new face of bossa nova, and introducing her sounds to the world. With the wonderful voice and guitar play of João Gilberto, brilliant sax by Stan Gets, and classic compositions by Antônio Carlos Jobim. (Edited)

This is one of the albums I have played literally hundreds of times.
1964 was the year when bossanova went world wide. Stan Getz was the famous saxophone crooner already having Jazz Samba" which he performed with Antonio Carlos Jobim, which by the way is fantastic in itself.
Few people knew what awaited them with this release. João Gilberto was already an established star in the Brazilian signature genre. Astrud, his wife had never before sung publicly and only in the couple's house. Getz was very fond of her voice and wanted her to sing a verse on "The Girl From Ipanema". As she couldn't speak English, she initially refused but luckily was convinced by Getz.
Getz' sax is mellow and warm, facilitated by the wonderful melodies and guitar playing, not to mention the warm and airy voice of Gilberto. Wife Astrud's persormance is simply stunning and one of my favorite vocal efforts.
Many aspects come together to create one of my favorite albums of all time.
