Despite the thrash metal purists' thrashing of this album, it was, is, and will be a great album. Just because it wasn't Ride the Lightning or Master of Puppets doesn't mean this album didn't have a good number of excellent cuts, some of which were as thoughtful as anything Metallica has written, even if they were delivered with less aggression.

I really like the Black Album. I know a lot of the fans that followed the band up until its release were deserted by the direction they went with this album. I like the thrash albums that come before it and I like the album itself. Its the albums that follow it where I start to get spotty with them. I wouldn't care if I ever heard Enter Sandman again at this point, but I still like most of the other singles. The Struggle Within is a personal favorite too.

One of the most epic heavy introductions of any rock album ever made...the first minute or so of Enter Sandman was the ultimate 'showing off yer hi-fi' piece.

But that song got a bit stale as it went on, just like the album. The songs weren't very ambitious, despite the two ballads. The songs became somewhat pop-formula (classic verse/chorus structure) and that's tiring to listen to if the choruses aren't catchy.

Still a decent album overall if you fancy that heavy crunchy sound.

Justice For All was Metallica at their creative peak. Weird mid-heavy bassless sound, but adds to the mystique. According to one of the engineers the lack of bass was intentional as a form of tribute to their previous bassist who died in a tour bus accident a couple of years prior.

True, but I think that's why they specifically said "purists." I've definitely met those people. It's a small, but annoyingly loud group within the metal community. You must have run into someone like that yourself. You know, the guy who only listen to metal and shits on everything else.

Anyway, the Unforgiven is one of Metallica's greatest tracks. And agreed that I never need to listen to Enter Sandman again.

I don't listen to much metal, but this album is a tenth as good as Lightning or Puppets. It's gruff radio pop, and I don't think it's aged well. It has nothing to do with purism, I just think they fell off rather quickly following the death of Burton. He was the most talented member of the band, across the board.

Was always a favorite through my teens. Not my favorite in the Metallica catalog but has some of their most consistently solid songwriting and production. If there's one thing I think that unfortunately goes by the wayside when people talk about this album it's how pleasantly dramatic the album is. The solo section in My Friend of Misery shows that dramatic element incredibly well through the guitar/drums interplay, one of Metallica's most underrated moments ever.

Important record for me, and many, but you can also look back and point to this record being important for a couple of wrong reasons, with many of radio rock's biggest shittiest bands citing it as an influence. Judging the Black Album by its merits alone though, it's one that would make the cut somewhere between 125-150 on my favorite albums list.
