I'm a big fan of 80s indie and England and Scotland had so many great bands in that genre. But what about Ireland? Can someone list some bands for me to check out. Indie rock/pop twee pop jangle pop etc whichever really.

A few that spring to mind...

Sultans Of Ping FC

Link

Fatima Mansions (and Microdisney before them)

Link

Whipping Boy (might not be up your street, but worthy of mention)

Link

The Divine Comedy (admittedly a little later)

Link

And of course Stump, with the best song written about American tourists in Dublin you’re ever likely to hear...

Link

I think Patman and Secondsoul both have charts full of recs too if you want to dig deeper. And to complete your tour of the British Isles don’t forget Wales - plenty of great ‘indie’ straight outta Cymru in the 80s and 90s.

Plus one for Stump. Absolute one of a kind band, delightfully bizarre. Also the drummer is my friends dad Very Happy

Shit I'd suggest first three albums by the Waterboys, especially their masterpiece This is the Sea. Also Boy and War by U2. If I Should Fall From Grace with God by the Pogues too. The Cranberries I think would fit in as well, and if you want to look to '79, I would recommend Inflammable Material by Stiff Little Fingers.

Jimmy and the lads have covered this pretty well alright so far, I'm just back from my holidays and I'm a bit out of it, but I can hopefully add a few more things in the coming days for sure, there are definitely some artists I can think of!

Finally getting around to replying to this a bit later, works been mad with Christmas deadlines and whatnot but let's give it a shot.

So to add to some rec's for some of the above mentioned artists, these are some of the albums I recommend most highly (a bunch of whom have actually made my overall chart)

The Sultans Of Ping FC
Tends to lie on the more punk side of things admittedly, but well worth a listen nonetheless.

I feel like Microdisney and their successor Fatima Mansions are both going to be right up your street (as well as anything Cathal Coughlan related, him being a key component of both of those bands). These albums are a must for the Irish 'indie' scene of the 80-90's.

Viva Dead Ponies by The Fatima Mansions

The Clock Comes Down The Stairs by Microdisney

Grand Necropolitan by Cathal Coughlan

Whipping Boy were another of the big ones from that era. Their most famous release being...

Heartworm by Whipping Boy

Other recs:

Gideon Gaye by The High Llamas
Not strictly out and out Irish but ultimately share their roots in Microdisney.

The Golden Horde by The Golden Horde
Early 90's psychedelic/garage shit that's pretty good, worth a whirl.

This is just off the top of my head but I can add to it in time, certainly missing lots of good shit!
