Very good album
I saw them live two years ago and they didn't play Fisherman's Blues
imo their best song.
I was a bit disappointed with that.
It was a great gig despite that glaring omission.

Great indeed. Nobody would agree with me, but I like them more than The Smith's.

Some songs I like better than others on this one but a really good album overall. "The Whole of the Moon" is one of the best pop songs of the 80s. I remember a bonus track called Beverley Penn that I really liked-never understood why it wasn't on the actual album. I also like the title track a lot. Hypnotic stuff and they do that big 80s sound so well.

Agreed with what others have said. The title song is by far my favorite. The Pan Within is also a favorite. Donno if I'd agree with them being better than the Smiths since the Smiths had a handful of good albums, but I certainly like this album better than any individual Smiths album. Just haven't been super impressed with the rest of the Waterboys' discography.

We were listening to Fisherman's Blues over the weekend which was the amazing follow up up to this one. This is the Sea is equally as fantastic. My favorite tracks are The Whole of the Moon, Don't Bang the Drum & the title track. Having said that; the entire album is very good. I think I may have to play it while making dinner.

You are strangely obsessed with whether somebody is better than The Smiths or not, lol.

Short answer: this album is better than any Smiths album.

Long answer: the two aren't remotely comparable, and I'd actually argue that is the best U2 album. It's full of huge, anthemic pop-rock songs that take elements of post-punk and Irish folk and big, balls-out '80s pop and put them together in ways that make them super easy to love and relate to. The Waterboys also have something of The Replacements in them, in that they're so obviously heart on sleeve and so earnest in their emotions, whilst retaining a necessary cynicism, that they court obsession, wittingly or otherwise. I know plenty of people of various ages, from my parents' age down to mine, who adore The Waterboys wholeheartedly, and it is truly deserved. They wrote the best songs, and they wanted their shit to sound fucking huge. They wrote songs that were at once universal and still super specific. They were incredible, and they should have been 100x bigger than they were. It's OK to like them more than The Smiths, because they weren't trying to achieve the same things. The Smiths are closer to Orange Juice, whereas The Waterboys are closer to U2. (The correct answer in both cases: Orange Juice; The Waterboys. The correct ranking: Orange Juice > The Smiths = The Waterboys [= The Replacements] >>>>>> U2.) Whatever, I'm usually wrong.

Joking aside, how did this comparison come up? In terms of mood, one is the epitome of aloofness, irony and melancholy, while the other is intimate, passionate and almost cheerful (not talking about lyrical content, rather the overall atmosphere). When it comes to style, they may be both based on a poppy background, but that's all. This one really goes for glory, mixing mass appealing epicness with some folkier elements and a touch of post-punk, which is far from the description one would use for The Smiths. Maybe the drumming shares some similarities (it's the 80's after all), but then again we 're nitpicking here, neither of them are notorious for this specific part of their sound, I thought there were more obvious comparisons to draw - not that we need any comparisons to appreciate this, it's a great piece of music on its own and so are the albums right before and after it, no idea about the rest of their discography.

Edit: lol, had I seen Skinny's comment, I wouldn't even bother posting, more or less my thoughts as well - with the exception of this being better than any The Smiths albums, which almost broke my heart. Shame on you
