'Under Cover of Darkness', 'Life is Simple in the Moonlight', 'Taken for a Fool', and especially 'Gratisfaction' are truly great songs. The rest ranges from just about tolerable ('Machu Picchu') to total dumpster fire (everything else). 'Gratisfaction' is incredible: The Strokes doing bouncy, pretend-drunk Thin Lizzy worship, but cooler. It's maybe their best song that isn't on the debut. Casablancas even affects Lynott's cadence at times, and they do the dual-guitar thing. It's amazing.

I made a 30-song playlist of Strokes songs I actually really like, and the debut takes up ten songs, Room on Fire has five, and this one and the last one have four each. Therefore it's basically equal third in their discography.

Nothing from First Impressions of Earth, Comedown Machine, or Future Present Past? It's been a while since I listened to either Angles or Comedown Machine, but I recall enjoying Comedown Machine better overall. Maybe like you said, the highs are good on Angles but the lows really drag it down.

I probably would've made the same playlist with half the songs.

I feel like this band was a bit hyped up. Really exciting at the time. Waaaaay less exciting now. Like don't get me wrong, their debut deserves it's place, but as artists/musicians/whatever they aren't that interesting to me. They were important to the garage rock revival (the 800th wave... hehe), and that's really the only reason most people care they exist. White Stripes were considerably more interesting.

This is the first album of the "New Strokes", as I like to call them. The first one where they moved away from the garage rock sound and into the more synth driven, modern sounding rock music, with Casablancas using his higher register notably more often. It's the sound they've been using ever since, and this is the first, messy version of it.
It is definitely uneven but it has some serious bangers, most notably Under Cover of Darkness, but there are several interesting songs. However, I feel like they've done this sound so much better on Comedown Machine and esp on The New Abnormal.

I find it interesting that Skinny likes Gratification that much, it's never been one of my favourites. Taken For A Fool is greath though.

And no, The White Stripes aren't remotely more interesting than The Strokes.
