It was deserving if they only released their debut, or the first three!
Suck It And See is kind of bland, but at least enjoyable bland and not insufferable-bland like AM! _________________ My Top 100 :

| Maybe, I'm missing out- I just don't see them as that important in the grander scheme compared to bands that came before. I've not really listened to them all that much though.

Their debut has been very important for me, but I think its appeal depends a lot more on the timing (being the right age, having similar life experiences and stuff) than any grand artistic innovation. Had it come out today or were I to listen it for the first time today, I doubt I would have been able to relate with it in any way.
The rest of their discography is ok-ish, nothing spectacular or groundbreaking, hard to imagine you'll find anything of interest if you don't vibe with their debut. _________________ Bob Dylan

Yeah, the age it hits you is key. I did like the debut and some other tracks from later albums stand out too. But I was probably too old to get excited about them at the time.

Definitely their weakest, least inspired album. Still, Love Is A Laserquest is such a gorgeous song, and possibly their best ever. The title track also rocks. _________________ All time

I used to love them when I was around 15 (which was also when AM came out). I might have agreed with them being that high then. But now I'd say you're right, within the grander scheme of things they're a pretty generic alt-rock band. I think their latest album goes in an interesting direction though, and hopefully signals some more experimentation.
First three albums are great, though, and their music is generally enjoyable with better lyrics than a fair amount of bands of their ilk. As for this album, it's their weakest, but it has some nice songs on it all the same. _________________ Top 40 Greatest Music Albums by indieshins

Even as a weaker album of theirs this has its moments
I agree that 36th best artist is too high a placement but it's good to see a young-ish band getting recognition too.
I always thought the term Suck it and see came from the British sweet (candy) gobstoppers. A boiled, hard sweet (piece of candy), a sphere which would often change colour when you sucked it.
Hence "suck it and see " what colour it would change to next,. That's where I reckon it comes from.
Or it could just be about new food in general.
By the way, AM is my favourite album of theirs.
