The thing I remember about this album was that they'd supposedly fired Lol Tolhurst after they recorded Disintegration because he wouldn't cut down on his drinking, and Robert Smith was saying things like "I realized I was depressed because I was in a band with Lol," and "he was ruining our lives," and so on. And this album did sound different, as there seemed to be fewer (or at least less prominent) keyboard parts, the guitars were turned up and more distorted, and it was more pop-oriented. Except a few years later, they claimed Lol hadn't really participated much on Disintegration either, they'd just given him co-write credits on all the songs to satisfy the lawyers. It was all a lie! Anyway, Wish ended up being their best-selling album ever, though I've always attributed that to the fact that it came out around the same time as XTC's Nonsuch, so there was probably a mass stampede of people heading into the record shops to buy that, and when they got there they were all like "ooh look, there's a new Cure album too, let's get both," which makes sense because everyone obviously had a lot more disposable income back in those days.
