I was thinking just know, have there been many examples of a brilliant song which was taken from an album that is often viewed poorly by critics and the public? One that stands out to me is 'Under Pressue' being from Queen's widely derided album Hot Space. I also think 'Touch Me' is far, far superior to everying else on the Doors' Soft Parade

The one that immediately occurs to me is "Achilles' Last Stand" from Led Zeppelin's Presence album. That was a long time ago, though...

I guess the last several U2 albums have been like that too, really.

There's too many to mention if we are talking about personal preference. But if it's about critics and the public then I see a lot of praise for Castle On The Hill from Ed Sheeran's Divide, an album that sooo many people despise, mainly critics.

I agree — you'd have to limit this to albums that were actually anticipated, like the follow-up to a huge blockbuster LP or maybe the first solo album by someone who was in a hugely-successful band, and for which there were actual bad reviews published in actual media outlets. Otherwise, you could probably just list two-thirds of the albums that were ever released, really.

To that end, another example that occurred to me today is "All Around The World" from Oasis's Be Here Now.

I’d say Shape of You from that album works for this. Castle on the Hill is 2nd or 3rd tier U2 imho.

This is an excellent choice. Achilles is the only song close to outstanding on that record. I guess Nobody’s Fault is good enough but the rest of the record is bland and way less interesting takes on sounds that defined the band’s previous periods. Tea For One isn’t even dollar store quality compared to Since I’ve Been Loving You.

Since I've Been Loving You is maybe my favorite song and definitely superior but I think Tea For One is actually pretty good as well.

Achilles Last Stand is probably my #2 favorite Led Zeppelin song but for me apart from that and Tea for one everything else is some of their worst material.

The Triumph Of Steel by Manowar

For me it's this. Always liked Manowar. First track I heard off this was Ride The Dragon. Loved it. So much I instantly went and bought the album. Very disappointed. Some other songs on it's alright but as an album it stinks. Hence I find it only has one decent song.

A Google search on the phrase "good songs on bad albums" returns quite a few articles, most of which are pretty much clickbait, but many of them do agree on "Under Pressure." Others that pop up on multiple lists include "Blue Jean" from Bowie's Tonight album, and "This Is England" from The Clash's Cut The Crap. One of them even claims Radiohead's "Creep" qualifies (i.e., they don't like the rest of Pablo Honey), so that should get a few BEA members up in arms at least. Smile

Also, the redeeming song from Oasis's Be Here Now is apparently supposed to be "Don’t Go Away," not "All Around the World" because the latter is too long. (And it's true, it is in fact too long.) So I guess I was one track off on that one.
