Another great one. And a formative musical experience to me. I was 17-18, and I loved music already. I'd heard about Joanna - possibly through this very site, but I honestly can't remember. Of course, her music was not, and for the most part still isn't, on streaming, so I had no way of checking it out. I saw this CD in my favourite record shop, tried to listen to it on the provided stereo, but couldn't, so I took a gamble and got it with no knowledge of what it would sound like.

I put it on my computer and then on my phone to listen to while I was at school, and started it while I was studying in the library. From the first track, Emily, I was in love. It's such a bizarre album in some ways, but it's also absolutely beautiful, with catchy melodies, beautiful instrumentation and hyper-literate lyrics. It's still my favourite Joanna Newsom album - though followed closely by Have One On Me (and she hasn't made a bad album yet either). 7 years after her last record, nothing new from her seems to be forthcoming. I am interested to see what direction she'll take, but she had a child in the last few years and understandably seems to be taking a break. The only peep I've heard from her is an appearance in the final episode of Brooklyn Nine-Nine in which her husband Andy Samberg starred. So that makes sense. Anyway - come back when you're ready, Joanna. But the fans miss you. At least the music is so dense and multifaceted we've got a lot to keep us occupied for the time being.

I agree with you very much. When I heard her first album, I was in love at once, and it only grew with her subsequent releases.

For me, Newsom’s discography, including the Ys Street Band EP, constitutes the most consistently outstanding body of work of any artist over the past half-century and more. Ys is actually the album of hers I listen to least, but it is still a remarkable piece of work, especially the amazing closer ‘Cosmia’.
