These days, anyone can fire up a fairly basic photo editor, apply a few effects, maybe fiddle with the "smear" and "smudge" tools, and have an image of their face looking like it's made of melting wax. But back when this album came out, you had to use all sorts of dangerous chemicals, apply just the right amount of heat, hold the paper at precisely the right angle, until it looked right... Of course, every time *I* tried to do it using photos of myself, it was a dismal failure. Yecch! In the end, it came down to a choice between replacing most of my skin with wax and melting my actual face, or just stealing some other visual concept entirely. Naturally, I chose Option 3, which was to wear a scary mask over my face every time I left the house — but then Peter Gabriel did that too, for his next (4th) album. I'm like, FFS, you can't win with this guy! And it wasn't until the So album that he finally did an album cover that was just a simple headshot with no fancy effects, so whaddya know, that turns out to be his best-selling, top-ranked album ever. Go figure... I prefer this record, though, by quite a wide margin.
