So I was in the process of doing a top 50 female artists chart, I decided I didn't want to delete my chart though, so I thought I would post it here Smile

Everyone else should do the same Very Happy

Up to you as to what you consider "female artist" I am fine with bands like Portishead as Beth is the chief singer songwriter in the band, however something like MBV or Sonic Youth is not really acceptable. Very Happy

Sure why not. I won't chart Portishead though, that would mean the main appeal is in Beth Gibbons, and I think it's the interaction between Gibbons and others that makes this band so great. I won't chart similar examples. So, only solo female artists, or girls-only bands, or girls-"dominated" band. I'll also limit myself to one album per artist/band.

1. Cat Power, You Are Free
2. Karen Dalton, It's So Hard To Tell Who's Going To Love You Best
3. Juana Molina, Un Dia
4. Nico, Chelsea Girl
5. Leila, Courtesy of Choice
6. Stina Nordenstam, And She Closed Her Eyes
7. PJ Harvey, Let England Shake
8. Sibylle Baier, Colour Green
9. Lisa Germano, Geek The Girl
10. Vashti Bunyan, Just Another Diamond Day
11. Billie Holiday, Lady Sings The Blues
12. Aretha Franklin, I Never Loved A Man The Way I Love You
13. The Slits, Cut
14. The Raincoats, The Raincoats
15. Emmanuelle Parrenin, Maison Rose
16. Buffy Sainte-Marie, Illuminations
17. Nina Simone, Wild Is The Wind
19. Brigitte Fontaine, Comme A La Radio
20. Linda Perhacs, Parallelograms
21. Shä-Key, A Head Nädda's Journey To Adidi-Skizm
22. Björk, Homogenic
23. Liz Phair, Exile In Guyville
24. Anne Briggs, The Time Has Come
25. Kristin Hersh, Hips and Makers
26. Suzanne Vega, 99.9°F
27. Margo Guryan, Take A Picture
28. Ella Fitzgerald, Ella Fitzgerald Sings The George and Ira Gershwin Songbook
29. Alice Coltrane, Journey In Stachidananda
30. Dusty Springfield, Dusty In Memphis
31. Alela Diane, The Pirate's Gospel

39. Mahalia Jackson, Newport 1958
40. Lydia Lunch, Queen Of Siam

42. Susana Baca, Ecos de Sombras
43. Missy Elliott, Under Construction
44. Françoise Hardy, Soleil
45. Ellen Allien, Berlinette

47. Colleen, Everyone Alive Wants Answers
48. Me Shell NdegéOcello, Comfort Woman

Yeah, that's a pretty extensive definition of "female artist". With these eligible, I would have added Cocteau Twins, Portishead and Mazzy Star to my list.

There's a distinct lack of Fever Ray on these lists. Shame on you

...as well as glaring omissions of any classic girl bands from the 60s (the Ronettes, the Shirelles, etc). It's a shame none of them ever did a studio album of any merit, otherwise they'd be high on my list. Which reminds me... where did I leave my car keys...??
