It's a compilation album

This is one of my very favorite albums of the 80s, and I feel bad not including it in my chart (because it's a compilation). I'll add this at leat to my 80s picks.

Nope - well not really

It is made up of a number of studio sessions that The Smiths recorded for Radio 1 in the UK... so it is a compilation of sorts despite only coming out a couple of months after 'The Smiths', their debut, was released!

It is not really a compilation in 'the best of' sense though... as they are alternative versions of the 'originals (plus I don't think you can't really have a best of when the band has only just released their first album and has only had about 3 singles!)

It is more a compilation in the 'different studio recordings' sense... A lot of the radio sessions recordings on this album do sound different from the 'originals'.

I don't really see it as a compilation in the conventional sense... and it and has been from the moment it came out my all time favourite album Laughing

It's clearly better than The Smith's debut, in fact this album would have been a more impressive first shot. Great record.

It is better, granted - but not by all that much (especially seeing as it doesn't include "I Don't Owe You Anything", possibly one of my top 5 Smiths moments). However stick "Jeane" on it and Hatful Of Hollow would probably have been the greatest album by anyone ever. Or close.

This was released in November 84 as the group were never happy with the debut album. For full story see Ian Harrisons article in the Mojo special edition "The smiths, stone roses and 100 greatest british indie records".

For me its the album that broadened my musical horizons from the Beatles, Stones, Dylan etc to encompass the new "Indie" genre, for which I am eternally grateful.
