When I first listened to it, I couldn't help but listen to it like 8 times within that same week. Didn't quite get it at first, but it got better and better with each listen and now I love it. _________________

Oh boy, here we go... It's a very good album, no doubt about it. The vocal harmonies of this group are always beautiful, even more so here, and I Know There's An Answer is a masterpiece of a pop song, probably their best ever and definitely the best this album has to offer. I also love the instrumental title track, Sloop John B (great lyrics) and the pessimistic Caroline No. Actually I don't have any serious issues with any of the other songs (except the boring Let's Go Away For Awhile) but they don't fascinate me, I just like them. Everybody talks about how the fact that the production sounds dated adds up charm to this album, but honestly it doesn't work with me. The lyrics, while definitely mature for a formerly surfer band, sometimes are a little too sentimental for my taste. And I have tried again and again and again, therefore I still can't find what's so special about God Only Knows. There I said it. Good lyrics, OK. I have also heard that many people, mostly musicians, appreciate it for its compositional complexity, and acknowledging my lack of music-related education, maybe that's what I'm missing? Anyway, I enjoy it, I really do, it's very solid and likable, but the '60s imho had much better stuff to offer, 1966 included. Now I'll wonder again why I Know There's An Answer is so underappreciated...

I think it's just been overshadowed by a few of the other songs on the album. Had they kept it as "Hang Onto You Ego," maybe it would have been bigger.
I've always leaned towards "I'm Waiting For The Day" as my favorite track on the album.

A brilliant album whose sheer brilliance I'm embarrassed to admit was somewhat lost on me until recently. My dad played this album a lot when I was younger and I don't think it clicked with me then, so it was hard for it to register with me for a while. But I've fortunately come around, and I'd say this album is more full of heartbreakingly gorgeous melodies than any other. From "Wouldn't It Be Nice", to "I'm Waiting for the Day", to "God Only Knows", to "I Know There's an Answer", this album gives me goosebumps all over the place. Hard to believe it was inspired by Rubber Soul, an album that is approximately one fucktillion times less enjoyable.
If this album has one weakness, it's the fact that it ends with one of its weakest tracks. I don't mind "Caroline, No", but it's fairly subpar compared to the rest of the album.
