Love this record, it's another one that's on/off my overall.
Mr. Cash's version of "Hurt" is one of the most haunting songs out there.

Cash's best since the mid 60s. It is essentially a cover album, but Johnny had a way of taking any song and making it his own. Besides Hurt, his versions of Personal Jesus, Desperado, I Hung My Head and Bridge Over Troubled Water are particularly inspired. And the gravelly sound his voice has at this stage of his career is just perfect for these songs. Brilliant stuff.

I found much of this album just kind of lacking. Johnny's thing of taking songs and making them all solemn and grave works wonders on Hurt and Give My Love To Rose but in other places, such as Bridge Over Troubled Water it just kills 'em. The more upbeat (well... more lively rather) songs aren't much better, with the wonderful exceptions of Personal Jesus and Sam Hall. _________________

Quite like Cash, but aside from "Hurt", I thought this was a big step down from American III and quite possibly the worst in the series.

What's your favorite in this American series? I'll check it out.

III, though the first is excellent as well.

Man Comes Around and Give My Love to Rose are top songs as much as the previously mentioned ones. _________________ Finnegan was super bad-ass.

This, completely. III was full of inspired song choices, and this one pales in comparison. _________________ 2021 in full effect. Come drop me some recs. Y'all know what I like.
