Pianist Kenny Cox leads the ensemble, which includes a saxophonist named Leon Henderson, who happens to be the little brother of Joe Henderson. Members of this Detroit based group had also performed with Detroit rockers MC5. This album, cut at the tail end of 1968 and released in early 1969, doesn't follow the trend of breaking into fusion or jazz funk (although "Trance Dance" is a little funky). The ensemble stays rooted in hard bop or post bop, and does so with that heavy duty, urban Detroit-bred jazz flavor. The album feels like a bit of an anachronism; just slightly out of phase with its time, and yet nicely in phase with my ear. Trumpeter Charles Moore deserves special recognition for his presence whether jamming or balladeering. If I had any negative criticism about the album, it would be that it does get a little samey before it's over. Still a mighty fine listen.
