Shorty Rogers is a big band swinging west coast kind of guy. As west coast jazz and big band are subgenres I don't always take to, after the first few bars, I braced myself for as much a slog as a joyful listen. There was no need. This music won me over rather quickly. Not only is Cool and Crazy full of fine compositions delivered with great elan, there is much innovation in the music making it seem quite advanced or even progressive for 1953. This music grabbed both my intellectual and my emotional ears. This was the most pleasant surprise in a listen experience I've had in some time. Rogers goes from pure swing to complex composition to pre-Maynard Ferguson screech to massive thunderdrums over a progressive composition (Tale of an African Lobster) all seamlessly and keeping the album holistic sounding despite the diversity. Two big fat thumbs way up for this one.
