Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. Pick out an individual track apart from the singles and they don't rank too highly or in fact make a lot of sense, but listen to the whole thing, for me for the first time in 1984, and it was something totally different. An album I still love to listen to now.....although I don't feel so strongly about their other albums.
