On their second record, The Revivalists revise their sound, turning their backs to Southern-influenced blue-eyed soul and delving deeper into indie rock territory with a heavy tinge of blues-rock. After a promising beginning, including the raspy and tough When I Die the album takes a turn for the duller, failing to bring variety or interesting lyrics into the mix. There are small highlights along the way, such as Navigate Below and the surprisingly poppy and rhythmic Criminal, but the rest don't lift the way they could have. BTBD is a pretty tiresome album closer. Overall though, I quite like this new direction in terms of sound, something that is further explored on later albums.
The strong vocals and hard-hitting rhythms are the best things this album has to offer. There are no hugely memorable singles or particularly original pieces of music, but the soundscapes are surprisingly loud at times, with some songs flirting with a harder rock sound.
