Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album has a Bayesian average rating of 67.6/100, a mean average of 66.1/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 67.3/100. The standard deviation for this album is 18.0.

Don't get the disrespect for this album. Maybe Hootie & The Blowfish are the US's equivalent of Coldplay for us? Hated by many just because they sold a lot of albums and maybe overplayed? I love this album. And I love Darius Rucker's voice too. Some beautiful songs on here. My favourites are Not Even The Trees and Let Her Cry,

I'm thinking another reason is that there were 4 mega hits on this album. I understand your point that there is nothing special about these songs, but you can't deny the catchiness of them. There's nothing wrong with straight forward catchy pop songs every now and then.

Proof that all you need is a 'cool' sounding band name to be successful. Can't think of any other reason this desperately average album sold so well. 19th all-time best selling album in the USA, sheeeesh.

It's bad and not good, don't listen to it please for the love of god... Actually though, it's really bad. After like, three or four songs, it felt like it was almost over, it was so boring. The production to me isn't even very good, and it's produced by the guy who produced R.E.M.'s debut album. There is nothing good I can really say about this album honestly. The lyrics on all of the songs are awful, the songs feel soooo boring, it lacks depth and any remote ambition. I'm glad I see it every time I go my my local thrift store, thank you jebus.

I'm kinda shocked this album sold over 16 million copies in the US alone considering how inconsequential the band were both after this release as well in today's musical mainstream.

It's not a bad LP - perfectly serviceable middle of the road rootsy bar rock. Darius Rucker just makes me laugh with how he sings - like a country Eddie Vedder.

Very good roots rock/pop rock/alternative rock album. Best 10 songs average is 88,7/100 and the album can get very good 90/100. Crit: It's a bit monotonous by listening the album from beginning to the end. However best songs are "Hold my hand", "Let her cry" and "Only wanna be with you" all 95/100, followed by "Hannah jane" and "Running from an angel" both 85/100.

This album was just very dry and lacked depth. It fealt as if I was listening to the same song the whole time. "Let Her Cry" and "Drowning" were the two decent works on the album. Let's just say I was glad to bid this album "Goodbye".

Likeable, but painfully safe. Great music for the elderly and the easily offended.

They were a little better than the novelty act people turned them into. I actually liked Fairweather Johnson better than this album...Honeyscrew is one of my all time favorite songs. Anyone that sees this just give that song a quick listen or two, it's great.

Ok, so this album is about as non-offensive as possible. The lyrics are dull, the ballads are cheesy as hell, and overall it's softer than the Pillsbury Doughboy. I'm still convinced that Let Her Cry and Hold My Hand are the exact same song (except that one part where the backup guy sings "won't you let me ruuuuuuuun with you" about two pitches above Darius [aka Hootie] and totally out of key...you know what part I'm talking about.) There IS one good song on this album: Time. You can probably trash the rest of this though. Shockingly, their next album (Fairweather Johnson) was actually pretty decent.
