Pavement avoided the sophomore slump big time, one of the best American indie albums of the 90s

Great follow up... Once again the first four songs are phenomenal. Then I'll take Unfair, Gold Soundz, 5-4=Unity, Range Life, Fillmore Jive. Doesn't need to be trimmed by anything, this is a really good album.

I'm an Indi/Alternative music guy all the way , yet somehow the Pavement thing completely passed me by . In 2018 I'm correcting that starting with 'Crooked Rain x 2 '

I'm love The Replacements , Weezer and R.E.M so naturally I'm going to love this album right ? Wrong

TBH it reminded me of my listen to Modest Mouse's 'The Moon & Antarctica' in terms of a highly rated album I should like but at the end of the day the magic just didn't happen . And god knows I tried , 5 listens tried and a podcast analysis tried

Let's start with the good: my favourite track was the much maligned "Hit the Plane Down" which I found edgy , weird and really interesting including the "no survivors" lyrics at the end . The fact that most fans hate this track and I loved it demonstrates my disconnect with this album . "Fillmore Jive " was my 2nd favourite track with the immortal line "When they pull out their plugs and they snort up their drugs , their throats are filled with ..." , followed by "Stop Breathin" with its Da Da Da Da ending and finally the quirky instrumetal "5-4=Unity"

Unfortunately there were too many songs that didn't jive with me , tracks I found boring and Malkmus' vocals irritating . For example "Cut Your Hair" was annoying back when it first came out and remains so today , "Newark Wilder" is down right awful as is "Heaven Is a Truck" and openers "Silence Kid" and "Elevate Me Later" are lame

I have heard 'Slanted and Enchanted' is more lo-fi so I'll definately be checking it out

Guess I'm not into Stoner Rock

Soffre il paragone col predecessore ma rimane un buon disco, abbastanza abrasivo anche se piĆ¹ addomesticato rispetto all'album d'esordio. Vive un po' di rendita, forse, ma ci mette anche del suo.

Their best and most consistent. Just insanely fun.

Great, but not quite consistent enough to be an all-time favorite.

Lo-fi? Way less than 'Slanted & Enchanted'. This album sounds pretty good to me!

Pavement's most ambitious but still a well rounded record. And it holds up perfectly 23 years later.
