What is a perfect album? The 100/100 not a bad song or note out of place album? When it comes to rating albums on BEA I have always drawn a line in the sand around the perfect 100/100 rating, it really does have to be perfect. For example I love ‘Screamadelica’ as an all time favourite, but is it perfect? Nope (“Inner Flight”), same with ‘Abbey Road’. Not perfect (“Maxwells Silver Hammer”). Point being my 100/100 ratings would be easily < 10 and ‘Billy Bragg Live at the BBC’ reaches that rare landmark

Every one of the 38 tracks paints a picture whilst delivering withering criticism on a range of social issues all with Bragg’s trademark humour. These are all tracks that soundtracked my life revisiting live versions was like reconnecting with old best friends

Highlights include “Like Soldiers Do” , rout 66 reworking “A13, Trunk Road to the Sea”, football hooliganism “The Few” , the simply hilarious “Goal Hanger”, the newspaper takedown “It Says Here” , the Wilco Woodie Guthrie collaboration “Way over Yonder … “ and of course one of the greatest songs of our times “Levi Stubbs’ Tears”
