Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album has a Bayesian average rating of 70.8/100, a mean average of 69.1/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 70.7/100. The standard deviation for this album is 18.3.

Bought this on the back of Pelican which is a class track, and almost not worth it despite that. Reminds me of the Beta Band but taking themselves too seriously which is not a good thing. It's alright to begin with but soon bores - not one I'm going to listen to too often, I'll just make sure Pelican is on my i-pod favourites!

It all felt overdone at first, but I had to change my opinion after a few more listens. It's quite good in fact!
I bought this on the back of the release of Pelican. I thought it was very much like Razorlight and wasted my money buying it. Not keen at all too drab for my liking
Brilliant album that is even better played live.

Now this album, is underated. Common guys, this is a phenomenal album. It shows the mature form of The Maccabees, compared with their previous albums. As you can perceive many influences, it's definitely not a mono-tone album. Go, Pelican, Ayla, Feel to follow, Forever I've Known, Heave... a great album. A top 10 spot for sure.
While I like the early Radiohead and Coldplay sounds I don't think I'm going to come back to this one. It is a good album none the less and it definitely deserves to be in the top 50 of 2012.

If i'm right, this was the first 2012 album added to the site.

What do i make of the maccabees? It's been 15 years since radiohead's "ok computer" and 17 since "the bends" but their influence is still being felt, most likely through subsequent derivatives like coldplay and muse. In this case, there's a heavy flavor of radiohead-by-the-way-of-coldplay-or-starsailor going on here that initially keeps me from focusing on the songs of "given to the wild". Turning to the vocals, they can sometimes be downright wussy-frail like at the beginning of "feel to follow", but elsewhere the vocals are quite emotive and tugging in a coldplay-kinda way. Overall, these are good songs, but there is no stratosphere-piercing "high and dry" or "yellow" in here, only semblances of their ghosts, which still work well.
Just recently came across them.... how had I gone so long without hearing them??
I like Ayla
