“Unicorn” really leans into synthwave’s tropes. Sci-fi aesthetics, sax solos, rolling synths dominate the album. Despite lacking an original edge, it often succeeds. They are delivered so earnestly and energetically that it’s fun. “Darkness for Dreams” is a highlight with its numerous creative bridges and breakdowns. This gonzo pleasure is hindered by a few things. The male vocals don’t work, with the instrumental style feeling a bit too flat in comparison. The slower tracks also lack any of the energy sustaining the record. Lastly, no matter hard it tries, it can escape from being too cheesy at times. A little too kitschy to be good, but not to be fun.
