Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album is rated in the top 4% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 76.4/100, a mean average of 77.2/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 77.2/100. The standard deviation for this album is 11.6.

Stephen Pastel and friends and this album in particular had a massive impact on my music tastes first falling for the NME C86 collection and finding my way to bands such as Jesus and Mary Chain, Shop Assistants, The Vaselines (yes even prior to Nirvana) and even the Soup Dragons.

Word to the wise - opening track is “Ride” is awesome and easily the best track here and one of the best songs of the Scottish Twee Pop era

After the string of amazing singles, expectations were high for their first album and so inevitably some disappointment, but it is a good collection of songs even if there were some I would prefer were on here. The opener, 'Ride' is probably my least favourite so make sure you get past that. The single 'Crawl Babies' is probably the best song, but my favourite is probably 'Get Around Town' which is about transport options in cities.

This is the quintessential DIY band and this first album of them fits that label even more. To me even a bit too much DIY because one of the big features is the off-key singing of Stephen Pastel which on many tracks is a bit annoying but becomes a feature on the long Baby Honey. So a bit of a mixed bag but still good.

I saw the Pastels many years ago at the Boardwalk in Manchester. They were utterly brilliant. That gig started a life long love that never seems to wain... I agree with Lancashirerab - everyone should have some Pastels in their life. :)

It's no wonder that Pam has crushed on Stephen Pastel :)

Everybody should own a Pastels' album. Stephen Pastel is such a great front man. I remember travelling through to Paisley to see the Pastels. We were all so excited at the prospect. It was a great night. We all bought Pastels badges to wear.
