"Tiger Bay" is very well produced, consistently impressive and never forgets the hooks or the dancey beats that still invigorate over 20 years later. Saint Etienne are the rare act that make club songs with unusually observational, sometimes bleak, lyrics and eclectic influences... it's a great blend. That's 3 worthy albums in a row!
A hauntingly beautiful album that is very special.
David's right. The original UK release is a nearly perfect album. Fortunately it was just released as a deluxe edition that's fairly easy to find. I read an interview before it came out with one of the guys, and he said he wasn't too pleased with the original because, basically, it didn't have enough hits. I was concerned that the deluxe edition would use one of the other track listings, but it has the one I prefer.
Like a Motorway is the highlight, but the last 4 tracks (starting with the 1st section of Western Wind) are hauntingly beautiful.
The original UK version from 1994 is the real,definitive way to most enjoy your visit to "Tiger Bay".Unfortunately,the version that's the easiest to find is 1996 re-issue.Still,better than nothing.
