So much to explore in The Cribs' fifth album. Heralded a "return to form" after the Johnny Marr-ed "Ignore the Ignorant" - "In the Belly..." showcases some classic Cribs lo-fi garage rock tunes such as the Albini-produced Chi-Town, to epic soundscapes such as centrepiece Back to the Bolthole and the band at their most experimental since Be Safe - the fantastic final four song medley (recorded at Abbey Road studios, no less).
This is godly songwriting! There is no such thing to fault here! They have no song at all which is better than 'Come On, Be A No-One'. I have to put the point across that this is the best album they have done so far! Fantastic!
This album really annoyed me, their last two albums got me buzzing for a new album, and when it came I was pretty disappointed. Chi-town's a great, intentionally simple and catchy song, but the rest of the album sees The Cribs replace their song writing ability for a love of retro. Before their sound was rooted in the presence and had a modern appeal to it, but here it sounds like a 90s throwaway album. Bit harsh but hopefully we havn't seen the end of this band and then they''ll return post greatest hits album with another fantastic album.

Rougher than their prior "Ignore the ignorant" what I seem to like about this album (and the band in general) is that they have lost all pretentious and dedicate to do what they do best, overwhelmingly addictive from start to finish...
